Eugene Cottrell, Pinecrest Director of Bands: Eugene Cottrell attended Concord College (now Concord University) in Athens, WV. He graduated from CC in 1994. While there, he marched with the world championship finalist Canton Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps in 1990 and 1992. In 1992, he was a section leader and soloist for the Bluecoats. After graduation, he taught at West Point Middle and High School in Mississippi as an assistant band director for 3 years. He then taught for 15 years at Northwood HS in Pittsboro, NC. While at Northwood he built a program that was widely recognized as one of the best in the state of North Carolina. Now, in his 2nd year at Pinecrest he looks forward to building on a strong foundation of musical excellence and pride.
Mr. Cottrell was named to Who’s Who of America’s Teachers in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2011. In 2005, Mr. Cottrell received one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a music teacher when he was named a National Teacher of the Year by the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.
In 2011, he received the Jackson Parkhurst Award for Special Achievement from the NC Symphony. This award recognizes NC music teachers who “Make a lasting difference in the lives of students of all abilities and backgrounds, Serve the community in an exemplary manner as a role model in music education, Instill a love for music in children, and Inspire students to reach appropriately high musical standards.” Mr. Cottrell is a published professional photographer and he loves golf more than it loves him. He also relishes family time with his wife, Leslie, and children, Madison and Sydney.
Evan Spivey is a 2013 graduate of Pinecrest High School where he participated in all bands. He was the captain of the percussion section his junior and senior year. He is a graduate of Sandhills Community College with an Associate in Science Degree in Chemistry. Evan has been playing drums and percussion for 10 years. He owns his own production company doing sound, lighting, and stage design around North Carolina. This is his third year as a percussion instructor at Pinecrest.
COLOR GUARD INSTRUCTOR
Hailing from Michigan, Ms. Jami Burr is a 7th grade Language Arts teacher at West Pine Middle School. She marched in her high school marching band’s color guard for all four years, two of which as a captain. At her alma mater of Central Michigan University, she marched all four years of her college career in the color guard. During college she was a rank captain and worked for a high school as their color guard instructor for 3 years. Winter guard experience includes marching World Class with Interplay out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
This is Ms. Burr’s second year with the Marching Patriots, and is always excited what each season can accomplish!
